Sound waves through a hanger!

We have been learning about how sound travels to our ears! Today we did an experiment using a wire hanger and string to hear amazing sound!
Sound waves are created by the vibration of an object (the wire hanger and string).  When vibrations hit your ear drum, your brain interprets the vibrations as sound.  When we listened to a pair of scissors hit the  hanger with the string to our ears, the sound waves are traveling through the solid string and hanger and since sound waves travel more quickly through solids, we hear the sound more clearly. In fact most of us thought it sounded like a drum! When we banged the hanger without putting the string to our ears, the sound waves are traveling through air to get to our ears making the sound more quiet.
